Five Reasons Why You Should Host a Brazilian Exchange Student!

By opening your home to an exchange student, you’re not just gaining a new family member – you’re welcoming a whole new world of experiences! Brazil is known for its warm and loving culture, unique customs, delicious cuisine, and so much more! You’ll have the opportunity to share your own traditions and learn about theirs, while creating unforgettable memories in the process. We have many students from Brazil who dream of joining your family for the 2024/25 school year. As summer wraps up and schools begin to start, now is the perfect time to jump in – host an exchange student today!

#1 Gain a loving new family member!

Leonardo from Brazil (left) with his happy host family in Texas!

We loved hosting Leonardo from Brazil! Our experience was that he came from a culture that was extremely warm and loving, as well as embracing those close to them as their own family. From the day he arrived, he called our three sons his brothers and really immersed himself as part of our family. When his parents and brothers came from Brazil to visit in April, we all felt like one big family with Leo connecting us all!

#2 Learn about Brazil’s cuisine and introduce them to American treats!

Brazil’s Independence Day occurred about 3 days after school started here. I did a bunch of research and made a full Brazilian celebration dinner for Maria from Brazil. Seeing her face as she recognized the food from home and the tears in her eyes was priceless.

It was fun to learn about their traditions and cuisine. Another fun time was when we introduced her to Rice Krispie treats. Needless to say, I ended up making a batch every couple of weeks because she loved them so much!

#3 Have a partner in crime for all your family adventures!

We loved Bibi (Bianca) from Brazil! She was incredibly kind-hearted, and funny. She made a lot of friends and was eager to be involved. She was always ready for an adventure! We worked out together and my husband also coached boxing, so she loved to practice together. She was very supportive and loved training for different sports with an amazing attitude!

We traveled together and visited our Grandma in Kansas a few times. Bibi loved going to our church and loved the positivity. We would play family game night and watch a lot of movies on girls’ nights. She was easy to hang out and go to events with. She liked it all while also being generous and thankful for everything. We as a family cherished our time with her and Ludovica from Italy. They were special!

#4 Learn all about Brazil in the comfort of your home!

Dan from Brazil was a blessing to our family. He was very knowledgeable about Brazilian history and passionate about telling us about his country. He explained about how they vote, elect their politicians, and how much of their rules and regulations come about!

Dan was also a typical big brother to our 10 year old son. They played and teased each other often. Dan became an integral member of our family and he is missed. We keep in touch with him and his family via WhatsApp. Our plan is to visit him and his family in Brazil next year. I would encourage any family interested in hosting a student to host one from Brazil!

#5 Travel and visit your student in Brazil!

I hosted Giulia from Brazil in Michigan for the fall semester of 2015. I later visited her and her family for 5 days in 2018. The experience was super fun and I spent good quality time with her. It allowed me to see her country not as a tourist, but as a traveler. Her dad owns a winery and everyone knows him, so people were chatting with us wherever we went!

It also gave me a sense of the area that she was from, and the history as well. There was a church we drove by and her dad told me a story where every family donated a barrel of wine to mix the cement, so the church was literally made of wine! The nice thing about seeing your student after a few years is that you still feel so connected to them. It carries on and all the the funny things that you learned about them when they were in your house, you get to see it live in action. It was a really sweet experience!
