Today we hear from Sarah from France, who spent the 2018-2019 school year as an exchange student in Texas. Now, seven years later, she’s back visiting her American host family and friends. Sarah shares how her exchange experience helped shape her future, opened new opportunities, and led her to where she is today, all thanks to her host family who welcomed her like their own!

A few years ago, I spent an unforgettable year as an exchange student in Texas. Now, seven years later, I’m back visiting my American host family and friends for the second time, and it still feels like home.
Spending a year in the U.S. changed my life in ways I never imagined. I discovered a whole new culture, made amazing friendships, and completely leveled up my English. I also grew a lot as a person : more independent, more confident, and more open-minded.
It wasn’t always easy. Sometimes I missed home, sometimes I had to adapt to things I didn’t understand right away, or met people who were not necessarily kind… but every challenge made me stronger. Looking back, I’m proud of what I achieved, and so grateful for everything I learned.

Now, I’m about to start a Master’s degree in English to become an English teacher in France. Without that year in Texas, I don’t think I would’ve found this path. It played a major part in opening my eyes and helping me discover what I love.
So if you’re thinking about doing an exchange year, go for it! It might just be the best decision you ever make.
