Beyond the Buzzwords: What Cultural Exchange Really Looks Like

Behind every exchange student is a local International Coordinator who helps things run smoothly and builds meaningful connections, like Emily in Utah with one of her students.

“Building bridges.”
“Opening hearts and homes.”
“Changing the world.”

You’ve probably heard these phrases before. They sound inspiring, but what does it take to turn words like these into real action?

At Aspect, we believe it’s through everyday moments and steady relationships created through cultural exchange and guided by International Coordinators who show up for students and families in their own communities and make a real difference along the way.

Cultural exchange doesn’t need a spotlight. Sometimes it’s bringing a group of students from different countries together to laugh, share traditions, and try something new together, like this group of Aspect students in Texas

That might look like cheering a student on as they find their footing during their first week of school. Or laughing together at a pumpkin carving contest with students who have never carved a pumpkin before. Or helping a host family talk through a cultural misunderstanding and come out stronger.

These are the moments where cultural exchange actually happens. And they’re the moments International Coordinators get to be part of every day. Cultural exchange doesn’t live in slogans. It lives in small, human interactions that build trust, confidence, and connection over time.

What “Building Bridges” Actually Means

“ Building bridges” is all about the steady work of helping people understand one another across cultures.

For International Coordinators, that means being a trusted mentor to an international teen far from home. It means helping students and host families navigate differences with curiosity and respect. It means listening carefully, asking thoughtful questions, and offering guidance when it matters most.

This work isn’t abstract. It’s personal, relational, and deeply rewarding.

International Coordinators make every moment count, helping international teens grow and feel at home in an American community for the school year or semester, like International Coordinator Kathy with her two students in West Virginia.

What “Opening Hearts and Homes” Looks Like in Practice

“Opening hearts and homes” is more than a phrase. It’s about making a real difference in communities across the United States. True hospitality doesn’t happen by accident. It happens when a local coordinator shows up, guides, and inspires, helping students and families grow from strangers to friends for life.

From first week to end-of-year orientation, International Coordinators guide students through a year of learning and growth. Here’s Kristine in Washington State with her students, celebrating their journey together.

The Role That Makes Exchange Possible

International Coordinators are the foundation of Aspect’s exchange program. They are local, community based leaders who support students, host families, and schools throughout the year. They’re the people who make meaningful connections possible, right where they live.

Their work includes recruiting and supporting host families, placing and supervising international high school students for a semester or school year, serving as the primary local point of contact, organizing orientations and activities, and helping resolve any challenges that may come up with empathy and clarity. It’s work that calls for organization, patience, cultural awareness, and genuine care. And for the right person, it’s incredibly fulfilling.

It’s the small moments that make cultural exchange meaningful. International Coordinator Julie in Nebraska celebrates with her students and an Aspect-themed piñata, helping them feel welcomed, supported, and part of the community.

Why We Are Hiring New International Coordinators

As cultural exchange continues to grow, so does the opportunity to be part of something that truly matters.

Cultural exchange is about more than learning in the classroom. These Aspect students are giving back to their host community, creating meaningful connections and leaving a positive mark on the place they call home for the year.

We’re looking for people who enjoy connecting with others and making a difference locally, who are excited to support an international high school student during an important year, and who want flexible, purpose-driven work rooted in their own community. You don’t need to have all the answers. Aspect provides training, resources, and ongoing support. What matters most is your curiosity, reliability, and care for people.

The Real Impact of Cultural Exchange

Cultural exchange isn’t about grand gestures. It’s about showing up, building trust, and creating moments of understanding that add up over time. It’s about helping a student feel at home during their time in the US. Helping a families and students build relationships that will last even after the student returns home. Helping a community see the world just a little differently.

That work matters. And it’s happening every day.

Lysa’s note is a reminder that cultural exchange is about people, presence, and lasting connections.
