Video Tips for Smartphones

We know that making a video can be challenging at times, that’s why we created these handy video tips to help make your next video a true masterpiece!

Shoot in Landscape: This simply means, turn your smartphone sideways so that the screen is more horizontal than vertical when filming. This will allow everyone to view your video at the best aspect ratio on all devices.

Lighting: Pick a bright area with a lots of light. The more light you have, the better your video will look!

Indoors: If you are filming indoors, try to avoid pointing your camera at the windows. This will make the people in front of the windows appear dark by comparison. Instead, arrange your shot so that the windows are along the sides or even behind the camera.

Outdoors: If you are filming outdoors, try to avoid direct sun light. It is often too bright, making people squint and appear washed out on camera. Instead, pick a spot in the shade! You will be amazed with how great your video looks if you film under a tree or awning. If it is a cloudy or overcast day, any spot will do!

Pick a Quiet Space: Sometimes this is just not possible but when it is, pick a quiet space so that your smartphone’s microphone can easily pick up everything that is being said.  Remember to keep your smartphone relatively close to your subject so that the microphone does not struggle to pick up the audio.

No Music Please!: Adding music to your video can be really fun but we will not be able to use any video that contains music that we have not already licensed. It’s a bummer but an important rule to follow.

Bonus Tip: The most important part! Don’t forget to have fun with it! Get creative and include the whole family if you can! We can’t wait to see your videos!

Submissions: Please upload all of your videos and video clips to YouTube, then email the links to publicity@aspectfoundation.org. Remember to include the challenge title in your subject line so that we can keep everything organized!

Privacy Note: If you don’t want anyone else to view your video clips once you have uploaded them to YouTube, use the “unlisted” privacy option. This will only allow those who have the link to view the video clip.
