Spring is in the air, and we’re excited to celebrate Kadiatu from Sierra Leone in this month’s student spotlight! She is spending the 2025-26 school year in the Nebraska, with the Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. Read on to see how she is going above and beyond by joining clubs, volunteering, and sharing her culture while making a lasting impact on her school, community, and host family!

What inspired you to become an exchange student?
I was inspired to become an exchange student because I wanted to experience a new culture and learn about how people live in other parts of the world. Growing up in Sierra Leone, I always heard about the United States and its education system, and I was curious to see it for myself. I also wanted to challenge myself by stepping out of my comfort zone, meeting new people, and sharing my own culture with others. I believed that studying abroad would help me grow academically and personally, and it has truly been an amazing opportunity.
What’s your favorite memory with your host family?
One of my favorite memories with my host family is spending time together during holidays and family dinners. Those moments made me feel truly welcomed and like a part of their family. We laughed, shared stories, and sometimes talked about the differences between life in Sierra Leone and life in the United States. Those experiences helped us understand each other’s cultures better and created memories I will always treasure.

What’s something new you’ve learned about American culture?
How much people value independence and individual expression! Students are encouraged to share their opinions in class and participate actively in school activities. It was interesting to see how schools encourage students to explore many different interests outside of academics.
Have you joined any clubs, sports, or helped in your community?
I have tried to get involved in my school and community as much as possible. I participated in school activities and also took part in community events when I had the opportunity. Being involved helped me meet new friends and feel more connected to the community. It also allowed me to learn more about American traditions and teamwork.

How has this experience changed the way you see the world?
This experience has changed the way I see the world by helping me understand that even though people come from different cultures and backgrounds, we have many similarities. Living in another country taught me to be more open-minded and adaptable. It helped me appreciate diversity and the importance of learning from others. I now see the world as more connected, and I believe cultural exchange helps build understanding between people.
If you could give advice to a student thinking about doing an exchange, what would it be?
My advice would be to be open to new experiences and not be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. An exchange program is a chance to learn not only about another culture but also about yourself. There may be challenges at times, but those challenges help you grow stronger and more confident. Most importantly, take every opportunity to meet new people, try new things, and enjoy the experience because it goes by very quickly.
