Thank You Thursday – Shabir from Pakistan

Cheers to Thank You Thursday! We’re excited to share a lovely letter written by Shabir from Pakistan, who is spending his 2023/24 year with the Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Program sponsored by the US Department of State in Arizona. In his letter, he tells us how the genuine kindness and warm embrace of his host family has positively impacted his life, changing it forever!

Shabir from Pakistan and Ambrosi from Mozambique with their host parents in Buckeye, Arizona!

I am truly overwhelmed with gratitude for the warmth and generosity that my host family has shown me. From the moment I arrived in America, all the way from my home in Pakistan, they have gone above and beyond to make me feel welcomed, valued, and at home. Their kindness has been life-changing.

What I appreciate most about my host family is their genuine interest in learning about my culture and faith. They have asked thoughtful questions, listened intently, and made a concerted effort to understand my perspective. This open dialogue has been incredibly meaningful, as it has allowed us to break down stereotypes and forge a deep connection.

Beyond just appreciating my background, my host family has fully integrated me into their family life. They have included me in daily routines, family meals, weekend activities, and even small, intimate moments. I feel like a cherished member of their household, not just a temporary guest. Their hospitality has been truly humbling.

I am also incredibly grateful to the Aspect Foundation exchange program for facilitating this life-changing opportunity. Their dedication to fostering cross-cultural understanding is admirable, and I am honored to be one of the students they have placed with such a warm and welcoming American family.

This experience has been transformative in ways I never could have imagined. My host family has not only welcomed me with open arms, but has also opened my eyes to the profound beauty that can emerge from embracing diversity. I am forever changed by this experience, and I will be eternally thankful to my host family and the Aspect Foundation for this gift.

Stay tuned for our next post, where his American host family tells us about the joys of hosting a Muslim exchange student!
