Celebrating Global Youth Service Day – Part Three

In Part Three of our Global Youth Service Day series, International Coordinators Susan and Elizabeth in Colorado joined their students to support a local kitten shower. Susan tells us how they donated supplies, learned about TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return), and how to care for vulnerable kittens. We want to give a big thank you to everyone who participated in GYSD and continues to share their stories, gifts, and efforts to make the world a better place!

the rescue

We volunteered at a kitten shower to benefit kittens and the families who foster them, if they are adoptable. Almost all of the kittens were rescued from being born outdoors, and some had no mother nearby. Some were born to feral mothers, and some have diseases that need treatment.

Another part of the effort is a Trap/Spay-Neuter/Return project to help prevent the overabundance of kittens being born in the wild. They work with a rescue organization for those who are adoptable. We brought much-needed items to the shower. They have a donation list (aside from money), and we brought kitten milk, kitten food, litter, nutrient supplements, and more.

It was very interesting to hear about the process of fostering, adoption, and TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return). We also saw 5-day-old kittens who were found under a lawn mower in an alley, still covered in birth and freezing cold. They were rescued and now must be bottle-fed every 3–4 hours and kept warm with a heating pad. The goal for kittens like this is simply to survive and eventually be either returned to where they were found (if feral) or fostered and adopted.
